// Hi Aden! Thank you for accepting our interview at Carousel, it's really a pleasure to have you here. First of all, could you introduce yourself for those who don't know you yet?
// I'm Dr AdeN HoD, an Austrian musician and scientist with roots in Bosnia, the former Yugoslavia and the Mediterranean region. My life has been shaped by different cultures, particularly Austria and Italy.
Professionally, I work in nanomedicine, life sciences and pharmaceutical research, while music has been part of my life since childhood. After founding and leading several bands and developing my own musical projects, I decided to start a new independent project, exploring a new musical style that feels more natural and authentic to me.
The name Dr AdeN HoD was partly inspired by friends who joked that, unlike many artists using the title ‘Doctor’, I actually have a PhD. So I shortened my surname, and the artist name was born.
¿y cuándo empezaste a componer tu propia música? // What was your first approach to music? And when did you start composing your own music?
Simplemente sucede. // Music has been part of my life since childhood, but I started playing guitar as a teenager. At the time, I was more interested in sports, especially football. One day, I picked up an old, dusty guitar that belonged to my uncle and had been sitting in the corner of our apartment. He showed me a simple melody on one string, and by the end of the evening, I was already playing something.
Soon, I discovered that composing my own melodies and writing lyrics came more naturally to me than playing covers. I started writing songs as a teenager, almost spontaneously. Ideas simply appeared, and I developed them into songs. Even today, I can't really explain where that inspiration comes from. It just happens.
// Something very striking when looking at your profile is the fact that you are also a scientist. Tell us: music and science, have you always developed them simultaneously? And nowadays, how do they complement each other in your life?
// Music came first, during my teenage years. Later, my curiosity about life — who we are, wherewe come from, and how everything works — led me into natural sciences, particularly the fascinating micro- and nanoworld of molecules.
Interestingly, while studying molecular structures, I began noticing certain parallels with musical notes and compositions. Both science and music require creativity, imagination, and the ability to discover something new.
Science demands precision and discipline, while music offers greater artistic freedom. Yet both involve exploring ideas and sharing them with others, whether on a scientific stage or a music alone.
For me, these two worlds complement each other beautifully, providing inspiration, energy, relaxation, and a valuable balance in life.
// Who better than you to ask, how do you think music and science are related as fields?
// I partly touched on this in my previous answer. To me, science and music share a surprisingly similar creative logic.
In music, individual notes and tones come together to form chords, harmonies, and eventually complete compositions. In my scientific field, atoms combine into molecules, which form increasingly complex structures, from molecular assemblies to biological membranes and cells.
Both disciplines require an open mind, experimentation, imagination, but also precision, discipline, and dedication.
What fascinates me most is the satisfaction of creating or discovering something new and sharing it with the world. Whether it's a scientific discovery or a musical composition, both allow us to leave something meaningful behind.
For me, that's what gives creativity — and life itself — a deeper sense of purpose.

// Your album “Q-NativeIm” came out a year ago, could you explain the name and the conceptual idea of the record?
// The title Q-NativeIm reflects a very personal philosophy: Q represents the key, Native represents nature and authenticity, and ‘I am’ represents myself. In other words, it is about finding the key to my natural self.
After years of playing in different bands and exploring various musical styles, I felt a growing desire to return to something more natural. I wanted to rediscover my natural deep baritone voice, play real acoustic instruments, and create music without unnecessary electronic effects or commercial calculations. My guiding principle became simple: less is more.
Most of the album was created in Trieste, surrounded by the beautiful Mediterranean atmosphere that reminds me of my roots. I wrote, arranged, and performed these songs spontaneously, following my emotions rather than musical trends. I was not thinking about genres or audiences. I was simply making music from the heart, primarily for myself.
Only later, when I had so many recorded songs in front of me, did I feel that I should share them. As I decided to publish them, I realized that they all could share a common message: Back to Nature.
For me, this philosophy goes beyond music. As a scientist working in life sciences and nanomedicine, I am increasingly aware of how modern life can distance us from our natural environment. Technology brings remarkable progress, but we should also consider its environmental and biological consequences.
I believe we need a better balance between technological development and our connection with nature.
Ultimately, Q-NativeIm is my personal return to authenticity, but also an invitation to reflect on our relationship with the natural world.
Back to Nature. Back to Myself.
6-¿Cómo te sientes respecto a este álbum? // How do you feel about this album?
// I feel the same about Q-NativeIm today as I did when I first created it. Because of other commitments, I never really had enough time to promote the album properly, organize a band, or perform live.
When I realized how many songs I had recorded, I simply decided to share them with the world through digital distribution, without any particular commercial expectations.
Now that I finally have a little more time, I’m enjoying introducing the album to new audiences and discovering how independent music critics interpret my work.
I’m particularly interested in genuinely independent perspectives — people who listen with open minds and express their own honest impressions, without commercial pressures or predetermined expectations.
For me, artistic freedom and authenticity matter much more than fitting into someone else’s idea of what music should be.
// As an artist, what usually inspires you when composing?
// I’ve never been able to fully explain inspiration. It simply happens. Whenever I pick up aninstrument, a melody or the essence of a song often emerges almost spontaneously, within avery short time. The rest is usually just a matter of refining it.
My inspiration comes from a wide spectrum of life experiences — small beautiful moments, emotions, memories, relationships, nature, friendship, and reflections on the meaning of life.
Interestingly, people sometimes expect me, as a scientist, to write analytical, political, or socially critical songs. But I’ve always been more interested in something timeless and fundamental: love.
For me, love is at the very heart and source of life. After all, our parents made love, and that’s how we came into this world. Without that fundamental connection between two people, none of us would even be here. That’s why love, in its many forms, remains the central theme of my songwriting.
I don’t try to calculate or explain creativity too much. I simply absorb life’s impressions and allow them to find their way into music. I’m grateful that this process comes naturally to me and that I can share a little of my inner world with others.
